Gregory Kharaneka - reeds

Gregory Kharaneka is a saxophonist and contemporary music interpreter who bridges tradition and experimentation. His artistry spans a wide range of genres— from academic repertoire to free improvisation, from solo recitals to interdisciplinary collaborations with electronics and visual arts. At the heart of his work lies an exploration of the saxophone’s timbral diversity and a search for new approaches to sound production. He perceives the instrument as a “polyphonic organism”—capable of imitating, blending, and transforming sound with remarkable agility. Kharaneka frequently collaborates with both Lithuanian and international composers, often inspiring the creation of new works for the saxophone. As a performer, he seeks to shape each piece into a personal sonic narrative—sometimes through precise score reading, other times through reflective improvisation. His playing balances structure and spontaneity, bringing together formal clarity with intuitive freedom, so that the music breathes with both rigor and vitality. Kirtis (Strike) presents three musical moments—three artistic directions—through which contemporary Lithuanian music for saxophone is revealed from different perspectives. Each composer leaves a distinct “strike,” a unique imprint. Together, these works form a unified narrative in which the saxophone becomes a resonance field, a voice, and an echo chamber for the visions of Lithuanian composers.
