Zarasai

Featuring:

Musicians on the recording

Anton Lukoszevieze - cello
Arturas Bumsteinas - electronics

This album is a live concert recording from an almost empty culture house, that took place in the city of Zarasai in 1946. Considering the historical context, the almost empty culture house is perhaps not surprising. This recording has been restored by Lithuanian Ensembles Network. One can only guess that Zarasai was a duo, as it is not easy to tell from the reel-to-reel tapes that have survived from the tumultuous events of the XXth century. Some musicologists have stated that Zarasai wasn't a band at all but a recording engineer who travelled around Lithuania recording various musical events given by local amateur musicians. The engineer signed the tapes with the name Zarasai because this was the place he was from. The most frequent musicians to be heard inside the Zarasai tapes are Anton Lukoszevieze and Arturas Bumsteinas. The Zarasai style, is perhaps unclassifiable, but one can sense traces of long forgotten Sutartines melancholia married to experimental lo-fi electronics and improvisatory abandon.
